2021 Mazda CX-5 Changes, Review, Release Date, and Colors

2021 Mazda CX-5 Changes, Review, Release Date, and Colors. The redesign of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 will make this vehicle more competitive in the compact crossover market. Changes for the 2020 YM were modest, with price bump and extra torque for a turbo engine. The new edition will be there with a hybrid engine if the company wants to stay in the game. There is a new styling on the way. Current generation dates from 2017 and it revived the Japanese brand. Now, it is time for a new step.

2021 Mazda CX5 Drivetrain

The company sold 150,000 units in 2018. In 2019 the number is even higher for sure. We expect final and official results. A hybrid engine is not promising sales increase, but it will make the 2021 Mazda CX-5 more interesting. Well, the carmaker introduced the CX-30 as its first hybrid crossover, and now it is time for a larger vehicle. We still don’t have details about this drivetrain.

The facelift will refresh the new Mazda CX-5. In 2021 we will see a larger grille and air vents. New colors are also on the way. However, red paintjob remains a kind of a trademark for the Japanese carmaker.

Further rumors are mentioning a diesel model for the USA and new SUVs. The CX-5 remains the most important unit Mazda has to offer.

More Power For Turbo Engine, I-4 Unchanged, Diesel Possible

The new 2021 Mazda CX-5 is coming with significant upgrades under the hood, that is for sure. But, the base version is bringing the same outputs, so there is not too much excitement there. A 2.5-liter SkyActiv unit is capable of producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission.

2021 Mazda CX5 Release Date

We could hear that Mazda is about to update the gearbox, but our reliable sources are not confirming this yet. The fuel economy is impressive and CX-5 will return at least 28 mpg. After the redesign, the crossover is going to be lighter, which could push the vehicle closer to 30 miles per gallon average.

The other existing motor is turbocharged to deliver more power. For the new season, it creates more energy and torque. In 2021 engineers are not going to push it further. With 320 lb-ft and 260 hp (premium fuel), the CX-5 is one of the most powerful units out there. The same transmission is forwarding power to front wheels. However, the turbocharged engine is more expensive and it consumes more gasoline. Combined, the same 2.5-liter powerplant returns 28 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined. Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds.

Diesel is Possible, But Hybrid is More Likely

Buyers in Europe and some other markets can find the CX-5 with a diesel engine. A 2.2-liter turbo-four mill can burst 170 hp and 290 lb-ft. Converted to performance, that is 3,500 pounds of towing capacity and 27/30 mpg of fuel consumption. The major problems are emissions and the biggest obstacle to the future of all diesel units in the US. Some other European countries are also more strict about these engines. For example, France plans to cut even petrol units by 2040.

So, a greener option is more likely for the 2021 Mazda CX-5. The Hybrid will add some extra horsepower and the fuel economy should be significantly higher. Some of the major rivals can do 40 mpg combined (Toyota Rav4 Hybrid and the new Honda CR-V Hybrid). Still, we don’t have any clues about the possible configuration. A 2.5-liter engine is probably the base for further upgrades.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Redesign Changes

Modest changes for the 2020 YM are the calm before the storm. In the compact crossover class, we can see updates more frequently than in other segments. So, the all-new CX-5 was introduced in 2017 and now it is time for a facelift. A large grille remains the highlight of the design, but this time it could be even larger. On the other hand, bumper and headlights are about to become smaller.

The interior is also going to be revisited. The compact crossover will use the same platform and the overall length will be pretty much the same. Still, if the 2021 Mazda CX-5 gains an extra inch or two, it will be cleverly used to make the cabin more comfortable. Even in 2020, we will see new features, for example, a larger touchscreen display at the central console. The company is about to update its entire infotainment system. Don’t worry, it will be simpler, faster, and compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Signature trim level is going to offer navigation.

When Will 2021 Mazda CX-5 Be Available?

Don’t expect the crossover to appear so soon. We must give some time to designers to update all the parts and features before the new 2021 Mazda CX-5 steps into the market. There are also questions about the new drivetrains, especially a hybrid one, and its price, of course.
