Ford introduced a redesigned Taurus this April and said it would be sold in China exclusively. What about the United States? Can this iconic model make a comeback?
It is too soon to speculate about its return, but everything is suggesting that this nameplate won’t come back. The sales are falling, so replacing Taurus with Fusion was a right decision for the Blue Oval manufacturer. It will need to produce and sell more than ever before if Ford wants to keep its Taurus model. Now, Blue Oval is far from it, and that is the reason why we won’t be seeing the return of Taurus.
2022 Taurus Still Has Important Role to Play
The 2022 Ford Taurus seems unlikely at the moment. To be more precise, it won’t happen, not in the near future. Various reports are still writing about its comeback. We think Taurus deserves another chance. Interestingly, about 20 percent of Taurus cars are turned into police cars. This is more than a good reason for Ford to start with the new-gen Taurus and its production. Of course, this would be a pricy investment if Ford wants to compete with Toyota Avalon or Chevrolet Impala.
Some car experts are convinced that Ford made a huge mistake by replacing mid-size Taurus for a full-size Fusion sedan. The customers are more attracted to mid-size models, and that’s a fact. The numbers are not lying, and introducing Fusion sedan seems to be a correct decision. Whatsoever, Ford sold more Fusions in July 2015 than Tauruses for a whole year.
What About 2022 Ford Taurus SHO Variant?
Another rumor is the return of the 2022 Ford Taurus SHO version. SHO stands for “Super High Output” so it is a high-performance variant. It is a slightly different division than SVT or Ford’s ST treatment. Back in the days, Taurus SHO was a very dynamic sedan with great performances. New SHO will also focus on styling and not performance, according to numerous speculations.
The same stories are suggesting its return with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. Thanks to that, the new sedan will produce 365 horsepower and up to 350 lb-ft of torque. That is a lot of power for a sedan, and the SHO version will be equipped with the standard AWD system and a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifter. Again, we think Taurus is not coming back anytime soon, including the Taurus SHO model.
Chances of Making a Comeback?
Zero. As we said, Ford made a smart decision by introducing Fusion sedan and killing the Taurus nameplate. We don’t like it, but this is business, and that’s how things work. There is not a single good reason for Ford to start with producing the new-generation Taurus if you exclude the Taurus models that are transformed into police cars.

The price is another problem as we think anything below $30,000 would be a huge surprise. It is still about $5,000 more than the Fusion.
