2022 Toyota 4Runner: Redesign, Colors, Rumors, and Diesel. The aging Toyota 4Runner gets attention with the superb off-road capability and old-school charm. The TRD Pro version is also its strong property and model provides also a versatile cargo area. Toyota made some important upgrades for the 2020 version including the new 8-inch touchscreen interface with Apple Car Play, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa support. All 4Runners come also with Toyota Safety Sense P-suite.
The current, fifth-generation 4Runner arrived for the 2010 model year and buyers are eagerly expecting the redesigned version. There were talks in the industry that Toyota might axe the 4Runner but surpassingly the sales of the model have improved in last years and model stands better on the sales chart than when was the fresh design. The rising interest for the body-on-frame, off-road SUVs has also been detected which is likely related with the recent arrival of the redesigned Jeep Wrangler and the approaching debut of the Land Rover Defender and Ford Bronco. The wind is blowing in a good direction for the 4Runner and the rumors are already circulating about the sixth-generation 2022 Toyota 4Runner and its possible design.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Performance
Despite the new generation 2022 Toyota 4Runner should adopt more sophisticated and lightweight platform including also possible integration of the independent rear suspension, the model should remain one of the most potent off-roaders in the market.
As for the powertrain solutions, reports suggest some possibilities. The redesigned 4Runner could use a 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the recently refreshed Tacoma pickup truck. This engine provides 278 hp and torque of 365 pound-feet for the best-selling, mid-size truck. The engine should appear with the six-speed automatic transmission like in the Tacoma.
The reports suggest also that Toyota might install a new turbocharged inline-6 engine under the hood of the new 4Runner. Toyota and Lexus hinted their intention to adopt the new inline-6 engines and the 4Runner could also benefit from it. The straight-6 turbo powers the new Supra with 335 hp and 365 pound-feet of torque. The current 4Runner gets 270 hp and torque of 278 pound-feet from the 4.0-liter V6 engine.
The new model could also offer manual transmission as the Jeep Wrangler.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Design
Toyota hasn’t hinted any detail about the sixth-generation 2022 Toyota 4Runner. There are rumors, however, spreading about mode’s possible design.
Based on the rumors in the industry, the redesigned Toyota 4Runner should arrive on the brand’s new global platform which is in development. The new architecture should be lighter but stronger thanks to the use of the modern lightweight materials and that would provide multiple benefits for the off-road-ready 4Runner. The new design should improve the model’s efficiency and performance with a special focus on safety. As per the reports, there is also a possibility that new 4Runner will switch to the independent rear suspension instead of the current solid rear axle.
Styling
As for the styling of the new version, several reports indicate that the FTAC Concept will be an inspiration for the new-generation design. That would mean that the model would share some styling similarities with the newest Toyota RAV4. If that would be the case, the new 4Runner will come with more angular front-end design and sleeker profile.
Interior, Equipment
The interior refinement is one of the model’s criticized aspects and Toyota will likely make the cabin of the redesigned 4Runner more comfortable and appealing. Toyota upgraded the infotainment system of the 2020 version and brought finally Apple Car Play and Android Auto features. The new 4Runner should, however, get the new dash design and instrument cluster as well as the redesigned center stack.
The model should also employ new materials and provide again a long list of standard equipment. The base version should come with the cloth upholstery but include power front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, HD and satellite radio and large center display.
All versions will again equip active safety systems like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping control, etc.
2022 Toyota 4Runner Release, Price
It seems that the new generation 4Runner isn’t under question but remains to see when it will appear. The reports indicate the debut of the sixth generation as the 2022 model and in that case, the prototype version should appear on the roads soon and give us better insight in the design of the new version.
If the all-new model appears as the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, the on-sale date will be in late 2020. The price should stay close to the current.
